Grieshaber's comment on this painting has been handed down by a contemporary witness: "Der Grasmann ist ein Vetter der antiken Daphne".
With this reference to mythology, the artist wants to suggest the closeness to nature of his depiction: The human figure squats amicably between large bird-like animals, as it were a symbiosis between man and animal.
It was the time when Grieshaber settled in his garden house on the Achalm and led a life with all his animals in the midst of nature.
